When to have your brake fluid serviced

Most manufacturers recommend brake fluid service every 2 to 3 years. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the air over time, lowering its boiling point and softening pedal feel.

Brake fluid service is a safety service. If your brake pedal feels soft, low, or sinks under steady pressure, schedule an inspection before driving more.

Short answer

Most manufacturers recommend brake fluid service every 2 to 3 years regardless of mileage, because brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. High moisture content lowers boiling point and can cause brake fade during heavy use, especially in San Antonio summer heat.

Signs your brake fluid is due

Soft or spongy pedal, especially after braking hard or driving in hot weather.

Dark, brown, or visibly dirty fluid in the reservoir.

ABS warning light or brake warning message.

Mercedes-Benz, BMW, or other European vehicles that show a brake fluid service interval reminder on the dash.

Flush vs bleed

Bleeding the brakes removes air from the system, often after a brake job. It does not fully replace the old fluid.

A brake fluid flush replaces the contaminated fluid throughout the system with fresh fluid that meets the vehicle's specification.

AAB Service uses the correct DOT specification for each vehicle, including DOT 4 or DOT 4 LV where required for European platforms.

Questions

Helpful answers before you schedule.

How often should I change brake fluid?

Most vehicles benefit from brake fluid service every 2 to 3 years. European vehicles often display a brake fluid service indicator when it is due.

What happens if I never change it?

Old fluid absorbs moisture, lowers boiling point, and can corrode internal brake components. In heavy stop-and-go or downhill driving, brake fade and longer stopping distance become more likely.

Will a brake fluid flush fix a soft pedal?

Sometimes, if the pedal is soft due to contaminated fluid or trapped moisture. A soft pedal can also indicate air in the system or a hydraulic problem, so AAB Service tests before assuming a flush will solve it.
