Safety note: avoid spraying unknown chemicals into vents or the HVAC intake. Use products only as directed and schedule service if odors are strong, persistent, or paired with moisture inside the vehicle.
Why A/C odors happen
A vehicle A/C system removes heat and moisture from the cabin. In humid weather, moisture can collect around HVAC components and create musty odors.
The smell may be strongest when the system first starts because air passes over surfaces that have been damp while the vehicle was parked.
Start with the cabin air filter
The cabin air filter catches dust, pollen, leaves, and debris before air enters the cabin. If it is dirty or damp, airflow can drop and odors can build.
Replacing the filter is often a good first step, but it may not solve odor if moisture or drain issues are present.
When odor points to a bigger issue
Water on the passenger floor, repeated musty smell, weak airflow, or odor that returns quickly after filter replacement can point to drain or evaporator-area concerns.
A professional inspection can check filter condition, drain operation, airflow, and signs of moisture where it should not be.
